Some skincare ingredients attract a spotlight. We like to pull up a chair and read the research.
Volufiline™ has sparked plenty of interest in fuller-looking skin. We understand the curiosity. But before getting carried away by a percentage or a promise, it helps to understand what the ingredient actually is and what its research can tell us.
A Little Launch Gift
Our first 25 orders containing Volufiline™ Facial Oil will receive a complimentary Anemarrhena Botanical Prep Spritz. Spritz first, then gently apply your facial oil.
One complimentary spritz per qualifying order, while our 25-bottle gift supply lasts.
Method of Application
→ Apply a small amount of facial oil to clean skin after water-based skincare.
→ If using our complimentary Botanical Prep Spritz, mist lightly onto clean skin first, avoiding the eyes. Gently pat in, then follow with the oil.
→ Smooth the oil over desired areas with clean fingertips, or gently spread with a clean facial roller using light pressure. Clean your roller after each use.
→ Avoid eyelids and direct eye contact. Follow with moisturizer if desired. During the day, finish with sunscreen.
Patch test each product separately before use. Discontinue if irritation occurs. The facial oil may also be used on its own.
Why Use This Product?
→Softness and suppleness: Our 95% Prickly Pear Seed Oil base conditions dry-feeling skin and leaves it feeling smooth and supple.
→A focused blend: We pair the seed oil with 5% of the supplied Volufiline™ ingredient blend in a formula with no added water, fragrance, or essential oils.
→An easy addition: Use a small amount on selected areas or wherever your skin enjoys extra conditioning.
→A routine that suits you: Enjoy the facial oil on its own, or apply after our Botanical Prep Spritz when included with your order.
Meet the Blend
Volufiline™ is a proprietary cosmetic raw material from Sederma, now part of Croda Beauty Actives. Its listed INCI is Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (and) Anemarrhenae Asphodeloides (Root) Extract.
That name describes a blend of an oily carrier and a botanical root extract. Croda lists skin conditioning among its functions and promotes it for cosmetic body-contouring applications. [1]
A little plain-English picture: Think of Volufiline as a supplied mixture. The trademark names the whole mixture, rather than just the botanical ingredient inside it.
Why the Interest in Fuller-Looking Skin?
Research associated with Volufiline explores sarsasapogenin and processes involved in fat-cell development and lipid accumulation. These laboratory findings help explain the interest in cosmetic plumping. [2]
However, laboratory cells cannot answer every question about a facial serum. We also need to know how the finished formula performs when applied to skin, in the area where someone intends to use it.
We would want direct evidence from a finished facial product before promising correction of hollows or replacement of lost facial volume.
What Did the Human Study Show?
A Sederma patent describes a small study in which participants applied a cream-gel to one breast twice daily for 56 days. Twenty-eight participants were evaluable at the final measurement.
The reported average increase on the treated side was approximately 2.2% at day 56, with a pH value of 0.10. That did not meet the commonly used statistical threshold of 0.05. [2]
The comparison breast received no treatment. This means the study did not compare the active formula with an otherwise identical cream base without the active. It also examined the breast, rather than cheeks, temples, or the under-eye area.
Our interpretation: This study gives us something to investigate, but it cannot establish what an ordinary facial serum will do for facial-volume loss.
The Percentage Needs Context
If a formula contains 5% Volufiline™, that describes the amount of the complete supplier blend added to the formula. It does not mean the finished product contains 5% pure root extract or 5% sarsasapogenin.
For example: In a 100-gram formula, 5% of a supplied blend means 5 grams of that blend. The amounts of its individual components depend on the blend’s composition.
A large front-label percentage therefore tells only part of the story. We also want to understand the raw material, the finished formulation, and the testing behind its claims.
What Would We Look For?
→Clear ingredient identification. What raw material was used, and what does the highlighted percentage measure?
→Relevant finished-product testing. Was the actual formula tested on the area being discussed?
→Reasonable expectations. Does the description distinguish cosmetic appearance from claims about restoring facial fat?
→A formula worth using. Texture, skin comfort, and the overall formulation deserve attention alongside the featured ingredient.
Our Approach at Garden of Wisdom
Our formula combines 5% of the supplied Volufiline™ blend with 95% Prickly Pear Seed Oil. We value the conditioning feel of the finished oil while keeping our expectations for volume-related changes measured.
An ingredient can be worth investigating while questions remain. We can be curious, enjoy the formulation process, and keep our descriptions honest along the way.
The Second Piece: Our Botanical Prep Spritz
Our companion spritz combines a distilled-water infusion of Anemarrhena asphodeloides root with Glacier Water and Leucidal SF. It adds a light dampening step before applying the facial oil.
The root comes from the same plant named in Croda’s ingredient blend, but our water infusion is a separate botanical preparation. Its composition and concentration are different, and we do not claim that it reproduces the effects studied for Volufiline™.
The facial oil can be used on its own. The complimentary spritz is a limited launch gift for our first 25 qualifying orders.
A Simple Two-Step Ritual
→First, spritz. Lightly dampen the application area with the botanical infusion. Skin should feel moist, without dripping. Avoid spraying directly into the eyes.
→Then, apply. Gently pat in the spritz, then smooth a small amount of facial oil over the desired areas with clean fingertips or a clean facial roller.
Our Quiet Note
We like interesting ingredients. We also like knowing what a promise rests on. With Volufiline™, we are keeping our curiosity open and our expectations grounded.
Two separate formulas, one simple ritual. The spritz lightly dampens skin. We do not claim that it increases Volufiline’s absorption or enhances its volume-related effects.
Shelf Life and Storage Information for Our Products and Ingredients
Finished Products - generally don't need to be refrigerated as they are preserved, but you can refrigerate them to extend their shelf life. The shelf life for most products is 9-12 months. Vitamin C Serum(s) and VitaResurface products should continually be refrigerated to extend their shelf life. Sample Sizes - do have a shorter shelf life (generally 3-6 months), and items in jars can dry up quicker than this if the lid is not tightened well enough (Vitamin C Serums - use within 90 days).
Please Keep Your Products Out of Humidity, Heat, Direct Light and in a Dark Cabinet When Possible
Exfoliating Acid - products have a shelf life of 9-12 months. The only things we don't suggest refrigerating are the Mandelic Acid Serums or Salicylic Acid Serums, as they can crystallize in the refrigerator. If this happens, you can set the product into a hot water bath to see if the crystals will dissolve.
Additional Items That Require Refrigeration and/or Kept in the Dark
Hydrosols and Distillates - remove 1 ounce of hydrosol and add it to a separate, sterilized spray bottle and spritzer. Keep the larger bottle in the refrigerator. Carrier and Exotic Oils - generally refrigerate all carrier oils, although some very rich oils will solidify. This is fine. All you have to do is take the oil out, warm it up at room temperature, and it should liquefy. If not, set the bottle in a hot water bath and occasionally shake the bottle, which will hopefully turn into a liquid. Some oils, like coconut cream and jojoba oil, have a super long shelf life.
Refrigeration of The Following Ingredients is Not Necessary, But it Won't hurt
Essential Oils - essential oils are best stored in a cool, dark place. Co2 Extracts - these should continually be refrigerated. Butters - we suggest refrigerating our "skincare" butters. You can remove what you need and keep the rest in the fridge. Clays - keep in a dry, dark place. Shelf life is at least 2 years. Herbs All herbs (whole or ground) should be kept in a dark, cool, and dry location. Herbal (liquid) Extracts are created using grain alcohol. The alcohol pulls the constituents (properties) from each herb, root, trunk, leaf, and flower. They have a shelf life of 3-5 years. They can be stored in the refrigerator or a dark, dry place. Other Raw Ingredients - such as Sodium PCA, Honeyquat, Oat Beta Glucan, etc., will all have different shelf lives.
Shipping Transit Note: Some customers have asked whether products can be affected by time in transit, especially during warmer months. Our products are formulated and preserved to remain stable during normal shipping times and should not spoil simply from being in transit.
That said, if you are concerned about heat exposure, you are welcome to add an ice pack to your order for extra peace of mind. Click here to add an ice pack.

Wound Healing Oil
I have a scar that is a year old. After using a silicone scar cream for a whole year, it was still burning, itchy, raised and red. I started applying Wound Healing Oil twice a day. Within a few days, the itching and burning was under control. It's been 5 months now and the redness has subsided and the scar is starting to flatten. It's a slow process, but it's working.
The BEST lil balm I’ve ever used. And I’ve been round a time or two. Absolutely decadent.
Miles,
I LOL when I read this because I thought of Dolly Parton's 'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas', the movie. Aside from the laugh, thank you for the wonderful review.
I absolutely adore this balm as well.

this cleanser didn't work for me, but i give it 4 stars because it seems to be a well formulated product that most skin types would like. i have extremely sensitive skin, eczema and rosacea, and i find if i use it more than two or three times a week i get kind of pink and blotchy. the cleanser has a lovely slippery texture, spreads and rinses very easily. it is quite concentrated so it should last a good while. it has a nice grainy, oaty scent that some people may not like (the aroma doesn't linger). here is a handy tip-if you are annoyed by the label getting wet and sticky when you touch it, try covering it with a few coats of clear nail polish, it really helps!
Hi Donna, thank you for sharing your detailed experience. We're glad you appreciated the formulation and texture, and we appreciate your tip about protecting the label.
Sorry to hear it isn't ideal for your sensitive skin, but your feedback will be taken back to
our next meeting for discussion. 🧐 Nail Polish is a great idea! Our labels are 'water-resistant' but not waterproof.
Thanks for your support!

Hi D R
Thank you for your kind review.
I am always such a goober about oils, and I wanted to mention that oils don't offer hydration
just conditioning, etc., although they are excellent to add after a hydration step in your routine to hold the moisture to the skin.
Wishing you all the best in your skincare journey.
