Peptides, Explained: A Little Guide from Garden of Wisdom

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins such as collagen and elastin that help give skin its structure and bounce. Some skincare peptides act like tiny messengers, sending signals that may encourage skin to maintain those supportive proteins. Others work in different ways, so each peptide has its own story. Think of them as little notes of encouragement for your skin: their results depend on the peptide, the formula, and consistent use, with changes usually appearing gradually.

Our Peptide Guide

Ingredient names can be a mouthful. Here we pair them with familiar names and simple explanations. Each little box holds the whole story, so there is no need to scroll sideways.

Our pastel key: Lavender for firmness and fine lines; peach for expression lines; mint for hair and nails; blue for copper and stress support; cream for collagen; pink for related botanicals. These are browsing guides, rather than strict scientific categories.

Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3

Ingredient name: Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3

Familiar name: Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3. Also a peptide component of Capixyl™.

Purpose: Hair and scalp support. Used in formulas designed to support fuller-looking hair. Capixyl™ combines this peptide with red clover extract; the peptide alone is not the entire blend.

Where we use it: Follicle Stimulator, Free of Essential Oils. Current formula confirmation pending.

Argireline®

Ingredient name: Acetyl Hexapeptide-8

Familiar name: Argireline®

Purpose: Expression-line care. Designed to soften the appearance of lines associated with repeated facial expressions, such as those around the eyes and forehead. Changes are gradual and depend on the complete formula.

Where we use it: Apple Stem Cell Elixir with Argireline; Blue Lotus Veil Eye Renewal Serum; Rose Stem Cell & Peptide Serum. Current formulas confirmation pending.

Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1

Ingredient name: Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1

Familiar name: Biotin peptide. Also a peptide component of Procapil™.

Purpose: Hair and nail care. A peptide linked to biotin, used in hair-care formulas targeting fuller-looking hair. Procapil™ contains this peptide alongside other ingredients, so the names do not mean exactly the same thing. Its role in a nail formula needs separate supporting information.

Where we use it: Follicle Stimulator and Nail Peptide Serum. Current formulas confirmation pending.

Collagen Peptides

Ingredient name: Hydrolyzed Collagen, pending exact cosmetic ingredient documentation.

Familiar name: Collagen peptides

Purpose: Protein-derived ingredient. Collagen broken into smaller pieces. This is a mixture of protein fragments rather than one specific messenger peptide. The product identified in our working notes is an oral bovine collagen supplement; its advertised oral benefits do not establish what it does when applied to skin.

Where we use it: Product placement and topical benefit description pending confirmation.

GHK-Cu / Copper Peptide

Ingredient name: Copper Tripeptide-1

Familiar names: GHK-Cu; GHK-Cu Copper Tripeptide-1; copper peptide.

Purpose: Skin maintenance. A small peptide bound to copper, studied for its role in skin-maintenance processes. In skincare, it is selected to support a smoother, healthier-looking appearance over time.

About “GHK-Cu 0.5%”: The percentage describes concentration, rather than a different peptide. Percentages should always be read alongside the formula and raw-material information.

Where we use it: Indigo Glow Copper Peptide Renewal Serum (0.5%). Follicle Stimulator versions require confirmation because formulas may differ.

Matrixyl® 3000

Ingredient names: Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7

Familiar name: Matrixyl® 3000

Purpose: Firmness and fine-line care. A pair of messenger peptides designed to support a smoother-looking skin surface and soften the appearance of wrinkles over time. Think of them as two little notes working together.

Where we use it: Blue Lotus Veil Eye Renewal Serum. Current formula confirmation pending.

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7

Ingredient name: Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7

Familiar name: One of the two peptides in Matrixyl® 3000.

Purpose: Part of a fine-line peptide blend. Works alongside Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 in Matrixyl® 3000. We describe the blend’s intended benefits together; findings for the complete blend do not automatically establish the same results for this peptide used alone.

Where we use it: Within Matrixyl® 3000 in Blue Lotus Veil Eye Renewal Serum. Any separate use remains to be confirmed.

Progeline™

Ingredient name: Trifluoroacetyl Tripeptide-2, for the original Progeline™ version in our working formula notes.

Familiar name: Progeline™

Purpose: Firmness care. Designed to improve the appearance of firmness and soften the look of skin laxity. Think of it as support for skin that looks less springy than it once did.

Where we use it: Progeline Peptide Repair Serum, Original and Vegetarian; Rose Stem Cell & Peptide Serum. Current formulas and supplier version confirmation pending.

SYN®-COLL

Ingredient name: Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5

Familiar name: SYN®-COLL

Purpose: Firmness and fine-line care. Designed to support collagen-related processes, helping skin look smoother and firmer over time. Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 is the active peptide associated with the branded ingredient.

Where we use it: Progeline Original and Vegetarian; Blue Lotus Veil; Rose Stem Cell & Peptide Serum. Current formulas confirmation pending.

Thermostressine® / Acetyl Tetrapeptide-22

Ingredient name: Acetyl Tetrapeptide-22

Familiar name: Thermostressine®, subject to supplier brand confirmation.

Purpose: Stress support. Designed to support skin’s response to everyday stress. Laboratory testing of the supplier ingredient shows increased HSP70, a protein that helps other proteins stay functional under stressful conditions. Think of it as encouraging the cells’ little protein-care crew.

Our working ingredient: A prepared peptide solution. Usage percentages refer to that solution, rather than pure peptide.

Where we use it: Neurophroline Skin Stress Serum. Current formula confirmation pending.

A Related Botanical Ingredient

PhytoCellTec™ Alpine Rose

Ingredient family: Botanical plant cell culture ingredient.

What it is: An alpine rose plant cell culture ingredient, rather than a peptide. Plant stem-cell ingredients do not become human skin cells.

Where we use it: Rose Stem Cell & Peptide Serum. Current formula confirmation pending.

A Quiet Note About the Evidence

Peptide research varies. Some findings come from laboratory studies, while others come from studies of a supplier’s specific ingredient blend. Those results do not automatically apply to every finished product containing the peptide. The complete formula and consistent use matter, too.

One Peptide at a Time

We are exploring these ingredients individually throughout our peptide series: what each one is, what it is designed to do, what the evidence supports, and where the marketing occasionally wanders off into the shrubbery. As each article is added, this guide will help you find it.
